[TamilNet, Tuesday, 19 December 2000, 02:48 GMT]
A Sri Lanka Navy sailor was killed and three Sri Lanka army soldiers were injured when the Liberation Tigers attacked the Saththurukkondaan SLA-SLN camp by the Batticaloa lagoon, about five kilometers north of the eastern town around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The Saththurukkondaan joint SLA-SLN detachment guards the main approach to the Batticaloa town. The SLN maintains a camp on the lagoon coast to patrol the area to monitor LTTE movements. The Liberation Tigers control the western coast of the lagoon and its hinterland.

Police sources in Batticaloa town said that the Tigers had simultaneously attacked SLA-SLN posts on the coast and the camp in the village.

LTTE casualties are not known.

The fighting erupted around 1 a.m. and continued for an hour according to initial reports.
