Inclement weather in Point Pedro forced the vessel 'Jaya Gold', to abandon unloading a portion of 13 metric tones of medicines badly needed for use at Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) urgently shipped 13 metric tones of medicines by its hired vessel 'Jaya Gold' on Monday from Trincomalee harbor as relief to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital which was facing acute shortages of medicines. After arriving at Point Pedro on Tuesday in bad weather, the port crew was able to unload with great difficulty only a part of the medicines. 400 bags of mail sent from Trincomalee was also unloaded. 'Jaya Gold', initially hired to transport seriously ill patients from Jaffna for treatment in Colombo, returned to Trincomalee Wednesday morning. The ICRC had suspended the transfer of patients from Jaffna to Trincomalee since last month due to the inclement weather.
