President to meet Ministers, party officials

[TamilNet, Sunday, 31 December 2000, 22:21 GMT]
President Chandrika Kumaratunge will meet key government ministers and prominent members of the ruling People's Alliance (PA) tomorrow, 1st January 2001, to discuss possible responses to the unilateral declaration of ceasefire by the Liberation Tigers, said political sources in Colombo.

There is confusion within the ministerial circles on the official position of the Government to the question of ceasefire. The President will address this pressing issue in the meeting, sources added.

The Political Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of the Peoples Alliance (PA) government, is also expected to meet in a few days to discuss the same issue, SLFP sources said.

Meanwhile, government sources said that Norway's special peace envoy, Eric Solheim, is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka next week for consultations with the Sri Lanka Government.
