Two Sri Lanka Army soldiers and a policeman were killed and a security assistant (Home guard) was wounded in two separate attacks by the Liberation Tigers on Friday in the northern Vavuniya region, local police sources said.

Two Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed when an army mini-tractor was hit by a claymore mine blast on Mahakachchakodiya -Pirappamadhu road, about 18 km. east of Vavuniya around 2.30 p.m. Friday.

The soldiers were returning to their camp at Pirappamadhu after supplying provisions to troops manning defence posts at Mahakachchakodiya, the sources said.

SLA troops, home guards and police conducted a combined search operation in the area following the attack.

Meanwhile a military trained policeman was shot dead and a security assistant wounded at Neruyakulam junction on the Medawachchiya -Cheddikulam road, around 1.30 p.m. Friday, the sources said.

The wounded security assistant was transported to Medawachchiya hospital and later to Anuradhapura, the sources said.
