Police fire wounds two

Two people were wounded when Sri Lankan police personnel lying in ambush near Kadalaachi Amman temple at Naavalady in Batticaloa, opened fire at devotees who had gathered for the temple festival in the early hours of Thursday.
The wounded men were identified as Jeyakaran Thiyakarasa,17 and Janakan Vavathamby,20. They were admitted at the Batticaloa hospital. Meanwhile five youths were arrested during a combined search operation by Sri Lanka Army soldiers and police personnel in the villages of Karuvakerny, Sunkarnkerny, Kinnaiyadi, Meeravodai and Kondaiayankerny in Valaichenai, about 32 km. north of Batticaloa, from Thursday, said local residents. Villagers were summoned to school grounds in Karuvakerny and Sunkankerny and interrogated in front of masked spotters, they said.
