Policeman shot dead in Batticaloa

A military trained policeman was shot dead by unidentified gunmen believed to be members of the Liberation Tigers at Kallady, 3 km. south of Batticaloa town, around 12 noon Saturday. The incident took place about 200 metres from Manchaththoduvaai police sentry post.
The dead police man was identified as Bandula. Elsewhere in the east, Sri Lanka Navy personnel and Liberation Tigers clashed at Thuvaranakadu near Mihindupura, 4 km. north of Trincomalee, security sources said. The fighting erupted when SLN personnel lying in ambush attacked a group of LTTE fighters, around 2 a.m. Saturday, the sources said. A LTTE member and a Sinhala villager was killed in the incident, according to the sources. Residents in the area said fighting went on for nearly 30 minutes.
