SLA shelling kills two, injures eight

Two civilians were killed and 8 others were wounded when a shell fired by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers hit Kinnaiyadi, a hamlet in Valaichenai, 30 km. north of Batticaloa around 7.30 a.m. Saturday, civilian and hospital sources said. Villagers said the shell was fired by troops stationed at the nearby camp at Kumburumoolai.
They said the troops fired two shells towards the village and one of them fell in front of a house, killing two civilians on the spot. The civilians killed in the incident were identified as: Visvalingam Kulanthaivel, 60, and Thinesh Murukupillai, 10, a student at the Kinnaiyadi Saraswathi Vidyalayam. Following were wounded in the incident: Malini Murukupillai,7, Sarikini Alakaiah,16, Santhieswari Murukupillai,17, Kiruthikan.S,4, Gowikanth.S,6, Jeeva Nakappan,5, Parathithasan Balaratnam,23, and Suthakaran Arunakiri,10. The wounded have been admitted at the Batticaloa hospital. According to hospital sources four of them are in a critical condition.
