The United National Party has called for "the immediate dissolution of the parliament and a general election held thereafter if there is no possibility of debating the no-confidence motion". Mr.Gamini Atukorale, Deputy Leader of the main opposition United National Party made this call addressing meeting at Kandy Friday evening.
The objective of the meeting was to create awareness among party supporters for the mass agitation campaign scheduled to be held on August 23 in Colombo, UNP sources said. "There was some sort of administration in past regimes. Today this is not the case. There is no government in the country. The country is on the verge of anarchy. Chandrika says that the 1978 constitution is the cause for the present political crisis. This is a lie," said Mr.Tilvin Silva, General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) when addressing a meeting at Galle Friday evening. Minister Mr.Richard Pathirana was also seen in the crowd attended the JVP meeting.
