Tigers, SLA fight artillery duels in Jaffna

Three soldiers were killed in heavy shelling by the Liberation Tigers on Sri Lanka army positions in Mirusuvil, southeast of Jaffna town Wednesday night. The bodies of the soldiers killed in the attack were taken to the Palaly military hospital in Jaffna.
Pt. Magistrate Annalingam Premshankar Thursday went to the hospital with Police personnel from Kodikamam to hold an inquest into the deaths of the soldiers. Several soldiers were wounded in the shelling which began late afternoon Wednesday, Police sources in Kodikamam said. Meanwhile, the SLA and the LTTE fought heavy artillery and mortar duels in the Nagar Kovil sector on the southeastern coast of Jaffna Wednesday night. The shelling continued till the early hours of the morning. According to unconfirmed reports, eight soldiers were killed and more than 13 were wounded in the artillery and heavy mortar attacks by the LTTE. Civilians in Amban, the village closest to the SLA base, said that heavy plumes of smoke were seen in the Nagar Kovil area following the shelling.
