Sihala Urumaya, JVP, UNP enter fray in Jaffna

The Sinhala Nationalist party, Sihala Urumaya, and the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the People’s Liberation Front of Thamil Eelam (PLOTE) and the Tamil national alliance filed nominations for the general elections on 5 December at the Jaffna District Secretariat (Kachcheri) Saturday. The chief candidate for EPDP in the northern district is Mr. Nithiyanandan ‘Douglas’ Devananda and for the Tamil alliance, Mr. V. Anandasangaree. The EPRLF (Varathar faction), JVP, UNP and two minor left groups, the New Left Front and the Democratic Left Front, have also filed nominations to contest the general elections in Jaffna on 5 December.

The Tamil national alliance candidates for Jaffna are:

1. V. Anandasangaree –TULF

2. S. Sivamagarajah - TULF

3. Mavai Senathirajah – TULF

4. N. Raviraj – TULF

5. N. Aravindan – TULF

6. A. Santhirarasa – TULF

7. E. Thangavel – TULF

8. A. Vinayagamoorthy – ACTC

9. K. Gajendrakumar – ACTC

10. C. V. K Sivagnanam – ACTC

11. M. K. Sivajilingam – TELO

12. Suresh Premachandran – EPRLF

Of these Anandasangaree, Sivamagarajah, Senathirajah and Vinayagamoorthy were members of the last Parliament. Mr. Gajendrakumar is the son of Kumar Ponnambalam, the leader of the ACTC who was assassinated last year.

The EPDP candidates are:

4. S. Thavarajah

5. S. Sivathasan

6. Maheswari Velayutham

7. T. Baskaran

8. K. Balanadaraja Iyer

12. J. Srirangeswaran (Rangan)

Of these Douglas Devananda, Kugendran, Thavarajah and Sivathasan were members of the last Parliament.

All the candidates of the Sihala Urumaya are Sinhalese and were flown into Jaffna Saturday. The SU chief candidate is Mr. S. Hettiarachci. The SLMC’s list is headed by Ahmed Sultan Subiyan.

The UNP is led by Mr. T. Maheswaran, ex-MP for Jaffna.

The chief candidate of the EPRLF (Varathar faction) is Thambirajah Subathran, and that of the Democratic Left Front is K. Senthilvel.
