Senior Tamil leader Sivasithamparam dead

Mr. Murugesu Sivasithambaram, President of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), the main constituent of the Tamil National Alliance, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning around two at the age of seventy-nine. The death occurred at the Colombo national hospital after a brief illness.
Mr.Sivasithamparam has been the sole national list parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance at the time of his death. Born on 20 th July, 1923, Mr Sivasithamparam entered active politics as a member of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) in 1960. He was elected to the parliament from the Udupiddy electorate in the Jaffna district. In 1965 he was elected Deputy Speaker of the parliament. A founder member of the Tamil United Liberation Front Mr Sivasithamparam contested the Nallur electorate in 1977 general election as the TULF candidate and elected to parliament with the highest majority in the island. He became the national list parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance following the general election held on December 05 last year.
