The Jaffna University was closed down Monday following violent clashes between student groups. At least three undergrads have been admitted to a private hospital. The Vice Chancellor has ordered all residential students to vacate the hostels immediately, university authorities said.
Clashes erupted between students of the faculties of science, commerce and arts over a private affair, students said. A group of students belonged to arts faculty attacked a business centre run by a student of science faculty Monday, damaging several computers and other valuable items, education authorities said. A contingent of the Sri Lanka Police rushed to the varsity premises to bring the situation under control. Now the university has been provided with full security by the Sri Lanka Police, sources said.
