Jaffna polls to influence asylum applications - paper

The Uthayan, the only daily news paper published in Jaffna, citing embassy sources in Colombo, said that western countries are likely to expedite the processes relating to the repatriation of Tamil asylums seekers there.

The paper said that western embassy sources were of the opinion that the successful conduct of the local polls in the peninsula and the establishment of local government bodies would help speed up the restoration of normalcy in Jaffna.

This, according to the embassy sources quoted by the paper, will lead to a review of the current policies of many countries which have temporarily accepted Tamil asylums seekers.
