SLFP opposes 19th amendment

The central working committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the
main constituent of the main opposition People's Alliance (PA) Saturday
night decided to oppose the proposed nineteenth constitutional amendment
restricting the Presidential powers to dissolve parliament.
The committee has entrusted the responsibility of investigating the proposed
constitutional changes and making any necessary recommendations to President
Chandrika Kumaratunge and her advisor Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar. The SLFP central working committee further appointed a panel comprising
Messrs Mahinda Rajapakse (Leader of the opposition), Mangala Samaraweera,
Nimal Sripala de Silva and former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake to
decide on the course of action to be taken in future to carry forward the
party activities, SLFP sources said.
