The ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam imposed in Sri Lanka has been lifted with effect from Wednesday midnight, the State run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) reported in its news bulletin Thursday morning. The Defence Minister, however, has the power to re-impose the ban, the radio said.
The Defence Minister, Mr.Tilak Marapone, has issued the relevant gazette notification de-proscribing the LTTE under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), the radio said. The ban on LTTE had been removed in consultation with the clergy and other sectors of the society to carry forward the present peace process in resolving the ethnic conflict through talks, the radio further said. Defence Minister Mr.Tilak Marapone obtained cabinet approval Wednesday at its meeting which was presided by the Prime Minister.
