The Sri Lanka army is building a new camp behind the Mirusuvil hospital, according to residents in the war-scarred town east of Chavakachcheri in Jaffna. The site for the camp is situated along the northern and southern boundaries of the hospital, encompassing lands and homes belonging to the townspeople.
"The SLA has no legal basis for taking over private property in this manner because the Emergency
Regulations under which it had the arbitrary authorityto do so earlier are no longer in operation," Jaffna TNA Parliamentarian Mr. M. K Sivajilingam said. The reason for the camp’s construction at this juncture is not clear, residents said. A junior SLA officer in the area said: "This is an important sector of the peninsula. It is the army’s
duty to keep its positions strong here and maintain the advantage."
