The National Anti-War Front (NAWF) Saturday announced that it would hold a mass rally and prayer meeting in Colombo on September 16 to invoke blessings for the historic peace talks at Thailand. "The people of Sri Lanka has been offered a new opportunity to end the twenty year old brutal war through negotiation," said the NAWF in a special message issued Saturday.
The mass rally and prayer meeting will be held at Colombo Independence Square on Monday evening to coincide with the first day of peace talks at Thailand, the press release said. Meanwhile, the Consortium of the Non-Governmental Organizations in the central province has expressed its full support to the peace process now being taken forward by the United National Front government. The Consortium in a statement said that all citizens irrespective of party and religious differences should support the government's move to find a negotiated political solution to the ethnic conflict. The Kandy District Religious Students Federation also issued a statement supporting the Thailand peace talks. People are now relieved of hardships because of the prevailing ceasefire in the island. This should continue. It is the duty of students to come out openly in support of the government's peace effort, the statement said.
