JVP lambasts peace talks

“It is very foolish to believe that Norway, which is
America’s quisling, would bring peace to our country.
America is trying to oppress and rule over the people
of the world. It is America that has unleashed terror
on Iraq, Cuba, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Eritrea,”
said the Janata Vimukthi Permamuna (JVP), currently a
powerful third force in Sinhala politics, in a
pamphlet issued Saturday at the conclusion of a
house-to-house campaign against the peace process.
The Sinhala nationalist JVP exhorted its supporters
and the public to rally round its cause and to start
an agitation against the “Norwegian traitors” and the
“government of the traitors, Ranil, G. L, Moragoda and
Hakeem, who are betraying the motherland.” The JVP sent out groups of its cadres on a
door-to-door campaign in all the villages and towns of
the Sinhala majority districts of the island from 27
October to distribute pamphlets and to convince the
public that the Norway mediated talks between Colombo
and the Tigers were an insidious conspiracy to destroy
the Sinhala nation. “In what direction is the UNP, the lackey of the
western imperialism, headed? Western imperialism is
destroying the world,” the JVP pamphlets say. “Let us save our motherland from the treacherous gang
of Norway, Ranil and Prabha” the JVP pamphlets state. On the last day of the massive door to door campaign
against a negotiated settlement to the island’s ethnic
conflict, small groups of the JVP attempted to even
convince Tamils in Colombo that the only solution was
to keep the LTTE strictly out of the affairs of the
village and town, until they learn it the hard way.
