RSF plans Nimalarajan memorial discussion

Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF, Reporters Without Borders) in association with The Nimalarajan Foundation is organizing a discussion in honour of Mylvaganam Nimalarajan, a BBC reporter in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, who was gunned down on 19 October 2000 at his home in Chunukili allegedly by Eelam People Democratic Party(EPDP) cadres, sources from UK said. The discussions will be held in the National Union of Journalists, London on 25 November.

The RSF will present during the discussions its report on the investigation into Nimalarajan's killing and the progress made since the case became one of the first to be taken up by the legal arm of RSF, the Damocles Network. The RSF will also propose a new insurance scheme to protect journalists working in danger zones.

The discussion on "War and Journalist," is expected to include issues on war coverage and risks faced by journalists, freelancers and stringers, and the responsibilities of the mainstream media as well as restrictions to the right of information in the theatre of war as ell as newsrooms outside.

Mary Colvin, Sunday Times who was injured on 16 April 2001 while reporting clandestinely from Vanni, Allan Little (BBC), S. Sivanayagam former editor of Saturday Review, Vaughan Smith Frontline TV will speak at the memorial discussion. The meeting will be chaired by Priyath Liyanage head of BBC Sinhala service.
