Abduction attempt thwarted in Valaichenai

[TamilNet, Saturday, 14 December 2002, 18:54 GMT]
Abduction of M. Krishnapillai, 61, of Vipulanantha Road in Valaichenai, Batticaloa district, by a group of persons claiming to be from the Police Intelligence wing was foiled by Valaichenai Police who arrested the abductors and their van yesterday night, sources in Batticaloa said.

The abductors alleged to have told Krishnapillai that they were from Kalakuda Police and that he was wanted at the police station for questioning, forcing him into a van and driving off.

Youths standing nearby, observing that the van was proceeding in the Valaichenai direction opposite to where Kalkuda is, promptly informed the license plate number of the suspect vehicle to Valaichenai police.

Valaichenai police received information from the Ottamavadi checkpoint that the van with the noted license plate was proceeding in the direction of Polannaruwa. On receiving details related to the absconding van, the Welikanda police was able to spot the van and arrest the abductors.

Krishnapillai was found unconscious with hands tied and was admitted to the Valaichenai hospital, where he is now recovering.

Valaichenai Police from their preliminary investigation believe that the abduction drama was staged by a returnee from Germany who had hired Sinhala mercenaries to carryout the abduction to settle grievances between the two families.
