Archaeologically significant findings in Kokkavil?
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 24 December 2002, 21:08 GMT]
The Road Development Authority (RDA) has dug out gravel sand from the Kokkavil area in the Vanni, and metal ingots thousands of years old, and possible archaeologically significant evidences, were also dug out while the workers of the RDA were busy excavating gravel in Kokkavil for renovating A9 highway, sources said.
Sources said that ancient pottery and metal pieces were also found in the gravel. Professionals with interests in archaeology have collected these and handed
them over to the Tamil Eelam Education Service. Recalling an assertion by the former director of the archaeological department, Mr.S.M. Deraniyagala, that ancient stone inscriptions could be found in the Kokkavil area, the sources say that this could be a significant
finding.
