Koneswara Hindu College celebrates national school day

More than a century old leading Trincomalee Sri Koneswara Hindu College
celebrated its national school day Saturday holding a road race where more
than
seven hundred students in three groups participated, east port town
sources said.
Mr.Villavarayar Sivalingam, retired Assistant Government Agent, and an old
student of the school was the chief guest at the occasion. Hundreds of
parents witnessed the event with much enthusiasm. Present Principal of the
school is Mr.S.Thandauthapani who is also the President of Ceylon Tamil
Teachers' Union (CTTU). |

| Sri Koneswara Hindu College was founded in 1897 and the Sri Ramakrishna
Mission took over it in 1925. Swami Vipulanananda who hailed from Karaitivu in the Batticaloa district
was the first Principal of Trincomalee Hindu College under the
administration of Ramakrishna Mission. It was elevated to Grade One School in 1952. Another primary school in the
name of Sri Koneswara also functioned close to Hindu College. On 1 February
1993 both schools-Koneswara School and Hindu College were amalgamated into
one institution under the name Trincomalee Sri Koneswara Hindu College. On
the same date Sri Koneswara Hindu College was elevated to the national
school status. Sri Koneswara Hindu College was the first school in the Trincomalee
district to be given national school status and more than
two thousand students now study in the school, sources said.
