Top-level ADB officials visit Vavuniya

A committee of top-level officials of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) visited Vavuniya Monday to hold consultations on planned projects on road reconstruction and electrical power distribution, sources said.
The high level committee included Mr. Tadashi Konda, director of the Infrastructure Division for the South Asia region, Mrs. Sriwidowwathy, Project Engineer, Mr. K.M. Thilakaratne, Project Specialist, Mr. John Innigan, Consultant for the A-9 highway project. The committee met with the Government Agent for Vavuniya, Mr. K. Ganesh, at the district secretariat and held discussions on the immediate needs, short and long term plans for projects on road reconstruction and electrical power distribution. At the discussion, the project director of the Ceylon Electricity board and the project director and Chief Engineer of the Road Development Authority provided more information on the projects. Following the discussions, the committee directly inspected the conditions on the A-9 highway. The project on reconstructing the highway will start next month under World Bank funding. The funding will also enable the provision of electricity to the SLA’s check points in Omanthai and Muhamalai, source said.
