Rehabilitation Minister Dr.Jayalath Jayawardene Monday instructed Jaffna's
Government Agent to take back all vehicles handed over to the chairmen of local authorities by the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority for the
North (RRAN) when elected councils administered these institutions, district secretariat sources said
The term of the elected administrations of the seventeen local
authorities in the peninsula ended on February 17 and since then special
commissioners appointed by the Provincial Commissioner of Local Government have begun
administering these institutions. However chairmen of all local authorities except those of Valigamam North and Pachilaipalli, have
failed to hand over their vehicles which were supplied to them by the RRAN, to the special commissioners, sources said. Most of these chairmen refusing to handover RRAN vehicles belong to para-military Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP). The EPDP spokesperson said they would hand over the vehicles to the RRAN if the GA demands the vehicles to be returned, sources said. Meanwhile the special commissioner of Valigamam West Pradeshya Sabha (PS) has lodged a
complaint against the former chairman of the PS for failing to return the
official vehicle supplied to him when he was in his office, sources said.
