Sub committee for women, children's welfare meet in Kilinochchi

First meeting of the Subcommittee for the welfare and rehabilitation of war affected women and children took place in Kilinochchi on Wednesday, and Thursday at the Peace Secretariat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), sources said.




Participating in the meeting presided by Dr. Astrid Heiberg, was Kjeresti Tromsdel, an official from the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo, five representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and five representatives of the LTTE.

Dr.Kumari Jayawardena, a social worker in Human rights and Women's rights, Dr.Deepika Udagama, Professor of Law at Colombo University, Ms.Kumudini Samuel, Human rights advocate, Ms.Faizoon Zakariya and Dr.Fazeela Riyas Medical Doctor from Batticaloa represented the GOSL.

Leader of the Political section of the women's wing of the LTTE, Thamilini Subramaniam, Piramila Somasundaram, Yaalisai Balasingham, Suthamathi Shanmugarajah, Gaya Somasundaram participated on behalf of the LTTE. Pathmini Sithamparanathan and Amutha Kandasamy also joined the discussions, sources said.

Participants from Colombo arrived in Kilinochchi by special Sri Lanka Airforce helicopter. Norway's chairperson of the Sub committee, Dr. Astrid Heiberg, arrived in Jaffna by commercial flight and travelled to Kilinochchi through Muhamalai sources said.
