City deserted as celebrations begin

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 February 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Colombo remains largely deserted today when Sri Lanka celebrates its golden jubilee of independence from British as most key roads in the city have been sealed off. There was very little traffic on the roads in the morning.

Most of the Colombo residents stayed indoors and school were closed.

Most people are watching the independence day ceremonies in Kotte, 6 km west of Colombo, on Television.
