K.Velupillai (47) and his wife V. Nagaludchumi (36) in Thimilaithivu, Batticaloa district, were injured in a grenade attack by two unknown assailants at 10.15pm Saturday night and are admitted to the Batticaloa teaching hospital, sources in Batticaloa said.
Velupillai was taking a bath near the well and his wife was eating her dinner outside when a grenade was thrown over the fence into their premises from the road by two unknown assailants. The house is situated in the high security zone in close proximity to Batticaloa airport, Police station and Sri Lanka Army camp, sources said. Police officials say that a para-military group opposed to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is likely to have carried out the grenade attack targeting cadres of LTTE who are they say frequent Velupillai residence.
