Reconstruction of Chavakachcheri town discussed

Proposals to reconstruct the Chavakachcheri town in Thenmaradchchi division in Jaffna district were tabled Friday at a conference attended by the Regional Director General of the Planning and Operation unit of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Mr.K.V. Dharmasiri. Multi-barrel artillery attacks by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to halt LTTE advances flattened Chavakachcheri town and its suburbs in 2000.

The Divisional Secretary Mr.K.Ketheeswaran, Special Commissioner of the Chavakachcheri Urban Council Mr.M.S.Saravanapava and the Northern province acting Director of the Urban Development Authority Mr.A.Rasanayagam, attended the conference held at the Chavakachcheri public library building.

Officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board, Northern Transport Board, Road development Authority, National Water Supply and Drainage Board also participated, sources said.

"Action would be taken to construct a new Chavakachcheri government hospital in the same premises of the badly damaged hospital.

"The reconstruction programme of the Chavakachcheri town should include proposals widening the existing roads, reconstruction of destroyed factories and other economic institutions and housing schemes," said UDA official Mr. Dharmasiri addressing the conference.

A team of officials later visited several areas in the Chavakachcheri town, sources said.

Major portions of the southern area of Chavakachcheri has been designated by the SLA as the high security zone, encompassing Thanankilappu veethi, stadium and cemeteries, sources said. Members of public are still not allowed to enter these areas, sources said.

Civil organizations have requested the authorities concerned to open the stadium and cemeteries for the use of public
