Pallai prepares to commemorate capture of Elephant Pass

[TamilNet, Sunday, 27 April 2003, 13:12 GMT]
Preparations are underway to hold a commemorative event in Pallai to celebrate the third anniversary of the fall of the strategically crucial Elephant Pass garrison and the successful defeat of operation 'Agni Khela' by the Liberation Tigers (LTTE), sources in Pallai said.

The stage for the celebrations has been constructed in the grounds where Sri Lanka Army (SLA) artillery base in Pallai once stood.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the event from the peninsula and the Vanni region. Organizers intend to provide adequate facilities to the large numbers converging in Pallai tomorrow, sources said.

Three foot long victory shields depicting a hand extinguishing a flame are to be carried by relay runners starting from Jaffna Secretariat at 10 am and another group of runners starting from Kilinochchi.

Residents in Pallai say that 3 km distance between the Pallai Tamil Eelam Police station to the event venue has been gaily decorated. The walls and vehicles are carrying posters with victory slogans, residents added.
