[TamilNet, Tuesday, 10 February 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Heavy fighting broke out in Kanakarayankulam this morning as SLA troops advanced towards Mankulam on the A-9, the highway to Jaffna, said SLA sources in Colombo.
Sources said that the SLA troops had advanced about 1 km from Kanakarayankulam, along the highway towards Mankulam. They said that the Army is confident that they will reach Mankulam soon. Meanwhile fighting has subsided in the Kilinochchi - Paranthan sector since Sunday, except for sporadic shelling by both sides, according to reports from the area. Meanwhile the SLA denied yet again yesterday that Kilinochchi town had fallen to the Liberation Tigers. The SLA said that its troops had only withdrawn 1 km from southern Forward Defence Lines (FDLs)
