Imtiyaz Bakeer Markar, Minister of Communications, Government of Sri Lanka, is expected to ceremoniously open the Vavuniya Main Post Office renovated at a cost of Rs.3m at 9.30am tomorrow, sources in Vavuniya said. A modern communication center with e-mail, internet, and telephone facilities will also be opened in another event to be attended by the Lankan minister.
The Vavuniya post office internal structures were severely damaged on 27 January 2000 when a powerful bomb exploded in the building premises injuring 73 and killing 12 personnel including a postal officer and a mail delivery worker. From 23 May of last year after the opening of A9 between Vavuniya and Jaffna, mail was delivered to Jaffna three days a week over land. Prior to that Jaffna received its mail at irregular intervals by ships from Trincomalee. Two new delivery vehicles have been allocated to support the expansion in mail services. This expansion will also turn Kilinochchi post office into main regional mail distribution center handling mail for Jaffna, Mullaitivu
and other districts.
