Trinco Rotary celebrates 24th Charter Day

Sri Lanka’s District Governor and Deputy Secretary to the Treasury of the Sri Lankan government, Mr.N. Pathmanathan appeared as the chief guest at the Trincomalee Rotary Club's twenty fourth Charter Day celebrations. The chief guest described the Trinco Rotary Club as a leader in the rehabilitation, relief, resettlement and reconstruction efforts in the war torn district, sources attending the event said.

“Trincomalee Rotary Club is deeply involved not only in providing relief but rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced families. The club has planned its activities to provide temporary shelters; vocational assistance to revive the livelihood of internally displaced and also to provide permanent shelters," said the Charter Secretary and presently Assistant District Governor Mr.T.Thavasilingam speaking on “ Silver Jubilee year of Trincomalee Rotary.”

“Because of war the potential of the northeast province has not been fully realized. It is high time for the Rotary Club of Trincomalee to concentrate in identifying talented persons of the Trincomalee district and honour them,” said District Governor commending the Trincomalee Rotary Club for selecting a sports officer Mr.Shanmuganathan Wijeneethan for Excellence Award in the field of sports in the Trincomalee district.

Mr. Wijeneethan as a sports coach produced nineteen medallists in the Trincomalee district from 1996 to 2002. He represented Sri Lanka at the 10th Asian Junior Athletic Champion held last year at Bangkok as national athletic coach, sources said.

Trincomalee Rotary Club President Mr.R.Thirukumaranathan in his welcome speech said, "let us continue to sow the seeds of love with lending a hand to cultivate peace in our nation and to improve the lives of the poor and those living around us."

President elect of the Trincomalee Rotary Club Mr.R.Rajarammohan proposed vote of thanks. Club Secretary Mr. S.Jayashankar organized the event.
