The security at the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) office in Batticaloa district has been strengthened with effect from Tuesday, said Batticaloa district EPDP leader, Paraneetharan Pratheepan. Number of Police officers in permanent security duty has been increased from 6 to 8, he added.
Strengthening of security was a result of requests by his office to the Batticaloa Senior Police Commissioner and by the actions of EPDP leaderhip in Colombo bringing to the notice of the Security officials the urgent need to provide security to EPDP personnel, Pratheepan further said. Twelve former EPDP Members of Parliament will each have 3 security personnel assigned to them, and the current MPs from ex-militant group will have 6 security details. Sri Lanka President, Chandrika Kumaratunge, earlier had shown active interest in the safety of EPDP members, political sources said.
