Jaffna district Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mr. Harold Anthony said at a press conference held Tuesday at his office that crime in the peninsula is on the increase and a special police team has been assigned to arrest the trend. Officers in charge of all police stations in the Jaffna district participated at the press conference, sources said.
SSP Mr. Harold Anthony further said murder, robbery and rape are on the increase in the Jaffna district. More crimes are committed in Kandy, Gampaha and other areas in the south. Jaffna district is also now started to tread in that path. This should not be allowed, he stressed. He added he has assigned a special police team to tackle this problem. People's co-operation is urgently needed to bring the situation under control. When it was pointed out that army is engaged in enforcing traffic laws at Muhamalai sentry point on the A 9 highway, the SSP replied it was duty of the Police to implement traffic laws and not of army. The SLA is to ensure security of the country. He said people could bring such instances where army is engaged in enforcing traffic laws, sources said.
