PA rejects interim administration for Northeast
[TamilNet, Friday, 23 May 2003, 19:30 GMT]
Sri Lanka's main opposition People's Alliance (PA) Friday rejected the proposal for an interim council in the Northeast made by the LTTE, and warned that it would be forced to take constitutional remedies if Prime Minister Ranil Wikcremasinghe agreed to the council “contrary to” the constitution.
The LTTE’s proposal urges the United National Front government to establish an interim administrative structure in the Northeast with adequate powers to undertake Northeastern reconstruction and development activities. Sri Lanka's President, Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge, is the leader of the People's Alliance and has the power to sack the UNF government. Addressing a press briefing Friday, the PA spokesman and former minister, Mr.Sarath Amunugama, said no one has the right to act beyond the limit of the present constitution. Mr.Amunugama further said the LTTE should renounce violence before it
participates in any talks on devolving powers.
