North-South peace sports festival to be held in Jaffna

Preparations are underway to hold the second North-South Peace Sports Festival in the Jaffna district during the first week of September this year, sources close to the chief co-ordinator of the festival, Minister of Lands Mr.Rajitha Senaretna said.

The second meeting of the organizing committee of the North-South Peace Sports Festival is to be conducted in Jaffna district Secretariat on June 2 and is to be presided by Minister Rajitha Senaratne. The first meeting was held at the parliamentary consultative room in Jayawardene parliamentary Complex on May 8 presided by Minister Mr.Rajitha Senaratne, sources said.

Parliamentarians of the northeast, officials of the northeast provincial, central government and sports department have been invited for the meeting to be held on June 2 at Jaffna, sources said.

Minister Mr.Rajitha Senaratne initiated the North-South peace sports festival and the first of its series was conducted in the Minister's home district Kalutara last year. Nearly thousand sportsmen and sportswomen from the northeast participated at the festival along with their southern counterparts.
