SLA extends railway supply line

The Sri Lankan army has commissioned the railway department to lay tracks from Vavuniya to Omanthai. The army has also asked the department to build a railway station in Omanthai. The work has already begun said sources in Vavuniya.

Military sources said that the laying of the railway tracks would help the army solve a lot of its supply problems in the Vanni.

The railway track to Jaffna has mostly been dismantled since the fighting erupted in 1990. But it remained partly intact between Vavuniya and Thandikkulam.

The army and the PLOTE in the Thandikkulam area completely dismantled and removed these railway tracks following a counter attack by the Liberation Tigers last year on the SLA troops of Operation Jayasikurui which was launched 9 months ago to recapture the highway to Jaffna.
