Surgical unit reopens in Manthikai Hospital

New surgery unit established with the assistance of World Health Organization (WHO) started functioning from Friday at the Manthikai Government Hospital, 2km south of Point Pedro, Jaffna daily Uthayan reported. Dr. Veronica who worked as part of the French medical group has been appointed Head of Surgery by the WHO according to the report.
Surgery clinics are held every Monday and operations are carried out during the rest of the week, the paper said. Since the anaesthesiologist position is still vacant, Dr. Veronica herself administers anaesthesia to the patients before the surgery. Hospital sources said that once a permanent anaesthesiologist is appointed the number of surgeries performed in the hospital will see a marked increase.
