NE local government week celebration concluded

Sustainable development could be seen in the war-torn Northeast province if the rehabilitation and development projects are implemented with the participation of the people, said North-East Provincial Council Chief Secretary, Mr.S.Rangarajah, addressing the provincial level 2003 local
government week celebrations in Trincomalee Monday evening.
Mr. Rangaraja was the Chief Guest and the Special Guest was provincial secretary to the local government, Ms Kamala Sivasithambaram. Provincial Commissioner of Local Government, Ms D.D. Wijeluxmy, presided. There are seventy-one local government institutions in the Tamil dominated Northeast province. Of them, 3 are Municipal Councils, 7 are Urban Councils
and 61 are Pradeshiya Sabahs. Ms. Sivasithambaram said that the North East Provincial Council is now defunct and it has caused severe set back to the development of local government institutions in the province. Ms. Sivasithambaram handed over the awards to the local government institutions adjudged best at the district level competitions and the chief guest Mr.Rangarajah gave away the awards to local government institutions
adjudged best at the provincial level competitions.

Vavuniya Tamil South PS has been adjudged best PS in NE and its special administrator Mr.C.Sathiaseelan ( R )receives provincial award from the Chief Secretary
Vavuniya Urban Council has been adjudged best in NE and its secretary Mr.S.S.Selvarajah (R) receives the award
Batticaloa Municipal Council has been adjudged best in the NE and its commissioner Mr.Saravanamuthu Navaneethan (R) receives the award from NEPC chief secretary
