The public in Vavuniya is concerned over a group of robbers based at the Vavuniya hospital who have abducted children who visit the Outpatient Department at the hospital and then robbed them of their jewelry, sources in Vavuniya said.
The Vavuniya Police said Friday that in the last week, two children were abducted from the hospital, their jewelry robbed, and later they were left alone by the robbers in a part of the Vavuniya town. The Human Rights commission in Vavuniya has also received complaints about the abduction and robbery. According to the Police, investigations have revealed that the robbers, who visit the Outpatient Department at the hospital, start a polite conversation with the parents of the children, and pretend to be upstanding members of the society, benignly playing with their children. When the parents have to go to another section to get their medicine, unaware that their new ‘friends’ are playing a sinister game, they ask the ‘friends’ to look after the children while they are away. The robbers then abduct the children.
