Vadamaradchy displaced receive spoilt rice[TamilNet, Wednesday, 27 August 2003, 15:26 GMT]The rice supplied to the displaced people and fishermen in the Vadamaradchi region by the Rehabilitation Ministry of Sri Lanka is spoilt and insects have been found in the rice, the Vadamaradchi Fishermen’s Federation said Wednesday. Even though spoilt, the Rehabilitation program’s rice is sold at Rs. 31.35 per kilo to the displaced while under the Samurdhi program (poverty alleviation), similarly spoilt rice infested with insects is sold at Rs.28.50 per kilo, the Federation said. According to the Federation, someone appears to be profiting from such sale of spoilt rice, while the affected people are left with the choice of starving or consuming the rice clearly unfit for consumption. The Federation’s Secretary, Mr. K. Sooriyakumaran said that he has lodged a complaint with Sri Lanka’s Rehabilitation and Resettlement Minister, Mr. Jayalath Jayawardene.
