The Sri Lankan navy claimed that they have rescued about 62 security forces personnel until this afternoon. Some of them have been brought to Colombo. Two Main Battle Tanks (MBT) also went down with the ships.
SLN sources said that there is a build up of Sea Tigers on the coast of Vadamaradchi east. The sea battle had erupted late last night when a group of Sea Tiger vessels had attacked a Dvora - the Israeli built fast attack craft - which was leading the convoy. The fighting between the Dvora and the Sea Tiger vessels had lasted for several hours when Black Sea Tiger boats had rammed into Pabatha and Valampuri, exploding on impact said sources in the north. Residents near the Vadamaradchi coast said that they heard the explosions and the exchange of fire between the SLN and the Sea Tigers.
