Sumanthiran makes challenges to shield political bankruptcy

[TamilNet, Friday, 19 December 2014, 23:35 GMT]
Colombo-based parliamentarian of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), M.A. Sumanthiran, who visited Batticaloa on Thursday challenged the SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa to release the purported ‘secret agreement’, signed between the common opposition candidate Maithiripala Srisena and the TNA. Responding, the grassroots activists from Aalaiyadi-vempu who met Mr Sumanthiran told TamilNet Friday that the TNA had failed to come out with a people-centric political move challenging the real perpetrators of the plight faced by Tamils and instead comes out with empty challenges to shield its political-agenda bankruptcy. The TNA should have made use of the opportunity to mobilise the Tamil masses to send message to the forces that stage the deceptive game of presidential election for the perpetuation of the genocidal State, the activists in the East further said.

Mr Sumanthiran was visiting the East under the pretext of collecting views of the village level members on the upcoming Sri Lankan presidential election.

While addressing a media conference after a get-together meeting held in Aalaiyadi-vempu Public Library auditorium, Sumanthiran said that Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa had alleged that Mr Sumanthiran was the ‘master mind’ behind the signing of the secret agreement between the TNA and Maithiripala Srisena. It was a blatant lie made by Mr Rajapaksa to divert the attention of the Sinhalese majority, Sumanthiran claimed.

Mahinda Rajapaksa had gone down to such a low level to spread false rumours to win the election, he said. The country is very unfortunate to have a president like him who could unleash unfounded allegations against the TNA to get votes of his community, Mr. Sumanthiran further charged.

In the meantime, the hierarchy of TNA and the Ilangkai Thamizh Arasuk Kadchi (ITAK) has been facing stiff criticism in the North, coming from leading grassroots activists like ITAK youth wing leader Sivaharan from Mannaar and veteran leaders like Professor S.K. Sitrampalam from Jaffna with regards to its clandestine deal with Chandrika Kumarautunga on manipulating the Tamil masses to vote for Maithiripala Srisena instead of coming out with a clear struggle-policy to the public. Strong objections to TNA stand have been registered in two recent meetings of ITAK and TNA in Vavuniyaa and in Jaffna.

On Thursday, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, the leader of the Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) clarifying TNPF and All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) stand at a press conference in Colombo said that Tamils should reject both Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithiripala Srisena in the upcoming Sri Lankan presidential elections.

Describing Srisena as just another Rajapaksa, who is being backed by the Sinhala extremist forces JHU and the JVP, Gajendrakumar said there was no use for Tamils in electing Srisena as he will also be following the line of Sinhala leaders of the past.

Gajendrakumar also explained that Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga who came to power in 1994 with the promise of peace adopted a ‘war for peace’ onslaught against Tamils and how Ranil Wickramasinghe claimed responsibility for bringing an ‘international safety net’ and for causing Karuna defection in crushing the Tamil movement.

The global and regional Powers locked in a geopolitical gambling have brought a contest between Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithiripala Sirisena, the TNPF leader said.

The Tamil voters who are concerned of their votes being misused if they abstain from voting could invalidate their votes and send the message, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said responding to a question from the reporters.

According to Tamil grassroots activists, the priority of Tamil political agenda at the moment is to send message to the Powers to stop coming out with further deceptions of Colombo-centric, united ‘Sri Lanka’.

If ‘regime-change’ is the wish of the Sinhala people, leave them to do it on their own, without giving room for blames and persecutions to come against the Tamil-speaking people later, the activists further said.
