2ND LEAD (Adds US draft resolution)

Tamil Nadu political party cautions on impending Geneva deception

[TamilNet, Thursday, 24 September 2015, 20:44 GMT]
The weak draft resolution coming from the USA will not bring in any justice to Eezham Tamils. Already, countries like Pakistan have insisted on further weakening of the resolution in favour of Colombo. But, India was silent in such consultative meetings held in Geneva, says Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, an Indian parliamentarian and one of the leaders of Paaddaa'li Makka'l Kadchi (PMK), a major political party in Tamil Nadu. He urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms Jayalalithaa to convene an urgent All Party Meeting in Tamil Nadu to press Indian Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi to come out with an alternative resolution at Geneva leading to international judicial process on war crimes in the island.

Dr Anbumani Ramadoss cited a meeting held in Geneva on Monday to caution Tamil Nadu on the ineffectiveness of the US move.

The PMK Parliamentarian was welcoming the resolution proposed by Ms Jayalalithaa and passed unanimously in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly on 16 September. The Indian Government has failed to honour the resolution by being silent on the meeting held on 21 September at Geneva, he said.

In the case of Bangladesh, the Central Government respected the sentiments of the people of West Bengal. On the question of Biharis in Nepal, the Indian Government takes a strong line with Nepal. But, the government is refusing to respect the sentiments of the people in Tamil Nadu seeking justice for Eezham Tamils, Dr Ramadoss said.

The PMK stand follows the widespread uprising that took place in Tamil Nadu on Monday, especially in the districts from where the party usually gets its demographic support.

The agitations demanding international investigation on Eezham Tamil genocide was participated by around 100,000 people and led to the arrest of a historical number of 60,000 in different parts of Tamil Nadu. It was organised by Thamizhaka Vaazhvurimaik Kadchi (TVK), led by Panruti T. Velmurugan. In the recent years, the TVK has emerged as the main competitor of PMK.

Anbumani Ramadoss had been the Union Minister of the Sonia Congress regime from May 2004 till he resigned his post in April 2009. His party PMK was part of the ruling coalition at New Delhi.

In the meantime, Mr R. Arul of Pasumai Thayagam Foundation, a PMK-founded environmental NGO having special consultative status with UN ECOSOC, also has come out with a statement on Monday strongly demanding an international accountability process.

“Tamils don’t have any faith on any Sri Lankan government led judicial process. Our demand is an international accountability process via setting up an ad-hoc international tribunal,” Mr Arul said.

Earlier this month, the NGO representative condemned political agitations in Tamil Nadu that were critical of the US move at Geneva.

The Tamil Nadu developments clearly show that without practical delivery of justice to fundamentals, Washington or New Delhi cannot anymore fool the emerging political awakening, political observers in Chennai said.

This is in sharp contrast to the line of ‘orchestrations’ taking place in the diaspora. Eezham Tamils could never get political justice without demonstration of Tamil geopolitical strength to imperialisms operating in the region, the political observers further said.
