Organised rings backed by occupying Colombo exploit natural resources in East

The Sinhala police and the military of occupying Colombo, collaborating with businessmen from South, are exploiting the natural resources of Paduvaan-karai region, where the major cultivable lands of Eezham Tamils in the Batticaloa district are situated. Paduvaan-karai, also known for dairy and cattle farming for decades, is being systematically targeted for Sinhalicisaton and colonisation by the Sinhalese from Polonnaruwa district under the rule of Maithiriapala Sirisena as the president and the minister of Mahaweli ‘development’. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are also backing Sirisena's discriminative ‘development’ programmes under the System B of Mahaweli irrigation scheme. It is under these circumstances, the occupying forces of genocidal Sri Lanka are engaged in plundering the sand and logging trees by harbouring the exploitative rings from the South.

Sinhala colony schemed with expansion of Buddha temple at Punaa'nai, Batticaloa

A small worship place with a Buddha statue, which was left behind by the occupying Army of genocidal Sri Lanka in 2016, has now been expanded into a big Buddhist temple establishment at 121st Mile Post on Colombo - Batticaloa Road in Punaa'nai East in Koa'ra'laip-pattu North (Vaakarai) division. The expansion has taken place in an accelerated phase in December 2017. The jungle area without any civilian settlement has been selected for Sinhala colonisation and the Buddhist vihara establishment has become the anchoring point, Tamil civil sources in Batticaloa North said. In the meantime, more than 150 Sinhala families have been settled near Punaa'nai Railway station three years ago. The settlement near the railway station was also commenced with the establishment of a similar Buddhist vihara.

Karuna paramilitary appropriates pastureland in Paduvaan-karai for electoral exploitation

Vinyagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, a paramilitary leader who has been collaborating with the Rajapaksa regime in the past, is again deploying violence and various intimidations, now against a section of dairy farmers from Chiththaa'ndi in Batticaloa district. In an attempt to woo voters for his political party from his native village of Kiraan, he is grabbing public and forest lands to convert these into agricultural lands for farmers, who had distanced from him since his betrayal to the Tamil cause in 2004. Paramilitary personnel carrying weapons have shot and killed cows belonging to Chiththaa'ndi farmers who are using the disputed area as pastureland for their cattle. 200 acres of lands have already been seized at Paalaik-kaaddu-veddai, which is situated close to Mayilaththamadu in Koa'ra'laip-pattu South division.

Colombo steps up structural genocide against Paduvaankarai in Batticaloa

Former LTTE members who have resettled in Paduvaan-karai region of Batticaloa district complain that they are being systematically neglected in the provision of even the bare minimum assistance in the form of housing and loans. The SL officials have also gone to the extent of citing a section of the ex-LTTE families being away from Paduvaan-karai during the times of war as an excuse to denounce such assistance. In the meantime, The Tamil farmers and fishermen in Paduvaan-karai blame SL President Maithiripala Sirisena for silently introducing a new ‘leasing’ scheme for Sinhala colonists to seize the lands of Tamils in Paduvaan-karai region. Sirisena's Mahaweli Ministry is also alleged of re-channelling the water away from tanks used by Tamils in Batticaloa to his Sinhala electorate of Polonnaruwa.

Another stupa erected at controversial Buddhist vihara in Kokku'laay

Sri Thissapura Gunarathna Thero, an extremist Sinhala Buddhist monk, who has been constructing a controversial Buddhist vihara establishment at the private lands of Eezham Tamils in the strategic Kokku'laay, which links the Northern and Eastern provinces, has put up another Buddhist stupa at the locality in recent weeks, Tamil officials at Karai-thu'raip-pattu division said. The monk is fully assisted by Sinhala soldiers who are deployed in civil clothes. Despite repeated complaints and interim orders coming from local and provincial authorities, the monk is continuing the construction with the backing of Colombo government, occupying Sinhala military and the extremist Buddhist Power Force (BBS). Mr Manivannathas, the Tamil owner of the land has once again sought help from the public to stop the construction work, but says no-one is coming forward to take up his case.

Colombo arrests Tamil temple trustees after controversial behaviour by Sinhalese in East

Elder generation activists prepared to sacrifice lives to win Ira’nai-theevu resettlement

They have been demanding resettlement in their native islets, which lie facing the Palk Bay. 8 years have elapsed since the end of genocidal war, the occupying Sinhala Navy is still adamant in its refusal to release the occupied residential, livelihood lands and the fishing coast which belonged to more than 2,500 people comprising at least 740 families before displacement. “We hoped that we could resettle in our village and celebrate 2018 New Year. But, we were deceived. If this situation continues after 01 January, we will have no other option than advancing our peaceful protest by proving our determination through sacrificing our lives even if it is necessary,” say the protesters.

Villagers marred by SL Police brutality for 5 months at Thunnalai in Jaffna

The poverty-stricken people of Thunnaalai, which is located 3 km off Nelliyadi, have been living under constant trauma for five months since 09 July 2017, when a 24-year-old youth was shot and killed while he was escaping a police hunt after illegal sand scooping in Kudaththanai. The villagers spontaneously agitated against the police crime. A police post was smashed and the people stoned the house of a notorious Tamil police officer. In turn, the SL Police has meted out a prolonged collective punishment targeting more than 40 individuals with repeated arrests, torture and various other harassments.

Controversial Buddhist cremation staged in Jaffna by SL military draws flak from Tamils

The cremation of Ven Meegahajandure Gnnanarathana thero, the chief prelate of Nagavihara in Jaffna, who passed away on Tuesday in Colombo, was carried out at Muttave’li by the occupying Sinhala military amidst widespread objections coming from Tamil politicians and leading lawyers in Jaffna.

Ex-LTTE survivors of torture, mysterious injections, harassed with blood tests, stringent restrictions

A 46-year-old former Tamil fighter from Koa'ra'laip-pattu (Vaazaich-cheanai) division of Batticaloa district, who was detained for the first time in 2013 by the occupying Sinhala military, this week revealed that he witnessed at least 15 former LTTE members being giving suspicious injections at the torture chamber of the SL military during his detention. He has also received five injections of unknown substance during the detention and has since lost his ability to concentrate and cannot take on any jobs that require muscle. The survivor also said the SL military has come with stringent instructions not to engage in social work and not to take up any role in rehabilitation or development related organizations at the grassroots. The former LTTE members are also instructed not to take part in the local elections.

25 acres of coastal stretch in Vaakarai seized for Sinhala colonization in Batticaloa

A coastal stretch running parallel to A15 Trincomalee highway in Vaakarai region, which was controlled by the LTTE before 2007, has been secretly transferred to a Sinhala business woman at the instruction of the occupying Sinhala Navy and Sinhala politicians from South, grassroots organisations in Vaakarai complain. The area, known as Noolam-paadi and as Club area, has been under the illegal custody of the occupying Sri Lanka Navy since 2007. The SL Navy is stationed in 15 acres of lands, which belongs to private owners. But, resettlement of civilians has been ‘prohibited’ in the area, according to the occupying SL Navy.

SL Intelligence harasses ex LTTE members, warns against contact with UN rapporteurs

Three different intelligence agencies of occupying Colombo are simultaneously harassing former LTTE members in Vanni on contacts they were having or expected to have in the nearest future with thematic special procedure mandate holders of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ex-LTTE members who have been grilled by the SL intelligence agencies in Ki'linochchi told TamilNet this week. The notorious ‘Terrorist Investigation Division’ (TID) investigators, SL State Intelligence Service (SIS) which is the official intelligence agency of the SL State and the intelligence wing of the occupying SL military have been contacting the ex-LTTE members in recent days inviting them for ‘conversations’. The intelligence officers have issued veiled threats claiming that they were aware of those getting in touch with the UN Human Rights system.

Sinhala colonists resume violence against Tamil farmers in Paduvaan-karai, Batticaloa

Sinhala colonists who have encroached into traditional Tamil areas in Batticaloa have again started to shoot and kill the cattle belonging to Tamil dairy farmers in Paduvaankarai region. Dairy farmers in Ko'ra'lai-pattu South blame three Sinhala encroachers as culprits after one of their cows was shot and killed on Thursday night. The farmers said they have recovered three of their cattle with gunshot injuries. Between 2013 and 2016, more than 1,000 cows, owned by Tamil dairy farmers were shot and killed. The process was accelerated after Sirisena coming to power. However, due to relentless protests and complaints, the menace was temporarily halted from the end of 2016. Now, it resumes again, Tamil farmers said. Paduvaan-karai was protected by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before the end of war in the East in 2007.

Peoples’ uprising on Heroes Day delivers strong message to occupying Colombo, foreign powers

More than 1000 families of fallen Tamil Eelam fighters gathered in front of the SL military demolished Heroes Cemetery on Rajaveethi Road amidst SL military harassment of blocking access to the memorial site, veiled threats of taking photos of the participants and the military display of deploying Armoured Personal Carriers and the firing of tear gas and demonstration of water hoses earlier in the day. Around 1,000 Sinhala soldiers were taking positions surrounding the largest Tamil Eelam Heroes Cemetery while Sinhala soldiers in civil clothes were riding vehicles. But, the soldiers in civil found themselves as they had to stay within their vehicles while the people brought everything to standstill as they emotionally marked Heroes Day remembrance at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

Jaffna University community marks Tamil Eelam Heroes Day with renewed resolve

More than 2,000 students along with lecturers, faculty deans and the staff of the University of Jaffna took part on Monday morning in an emotional floral tribute in front of the newly renovated Tamil Eelam Heroes memorial statue, which was destroyed by the occupying SL military after 2009. The event on Monday was equally emotional to the first event held 12 years ago when the statue was declared open. "The people of Jaffna will never forget nor pardon the desecration of the memorials," the vice chancellor at that time Prof Mohanadas told TamilNet after declaring the statue open in 2005. After 2009, the occupying SL military also destroyed the statue inside the University premises as it razed to the grounds all the Heroes’ cemeteries in occupied Tamil Eelam. The emotional event in Jaffna on Monday has passed a strong message to the world, student leaders at Jaffna university said.
