Wickramasinghe's ‘national policy’ ministry practices Sinhala Only policy

The SL Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs, which is led by SL Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, has issued appointment letters in the Sinhala language to Eezham Tamil applicants in Batticaloa, who applied to the positions of ‘development officers’ which is offered to unemployed graduates at a district level. The applicants who struggled to find out the details of their appointment letters were shocked to learn that they had been posted to Sinhala areas in Polonnaruwa and other districts. Those who received positions in Polonnaruwa district in the North Central Province said they would have to spend 21,000 rupees a month to commute to work. Wickmrasinghe's ministry has only promised “an all-inclusive monthly allowance of Rs 20,000”.

Maithiripala's ministry escalates Sinhala-Tamil coastal disputes in Mullaiththeevu

The Colombo-based Mahaweli Authority, which is the implementation agency coming under SL President Maithiriapala Sirisena's Mahaweli Ministry of the unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka, has recently allocated permit lands in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils to two main violent proponents of SL Navy backed Sinhala occupation at Kokku'laay in Mullaiththeevu. Mr Maithiripala's ministry and its implementing authority were intervening to sustain their conflict of fisheries occupation by allocating new public lands to the violators after the three judges of SL Supreme Court in February defended the initial verdict of Mullaiththeevu District/Magistrates’ Court that had instructed the encroachers to vacate from the public lands used as their base.

Colombo schemes Sinhala-Buddhicisation of Tamil heritage site in Vavuniyaa North

The occupying unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka has prohibited Eezham Tamils at Oldu-madu village in Vavuniyaa North from accessing 157-meter-high hill called Vedukku-naa'ri. The issue became a hot topic on 10 August, a day before the annual religious ritual of Aadi Amaavaasai (the new moon of the Tamil month July-August) observed in remembrance of the ancestors by the Saivites (Hindus). The SL Police blocked the Poosaari (non-Brahmin priest) of the village-deity, based on a complaint made by the SL Archaeology Department on 07 August. The SL Police has instructed Poosari and the villagers to keep away from the hilltop. Only after the repeated pleas, they were allowed to access their temple once on 11 August. Now, they have to face heritage genocide on their own, V. Poobalasingam, a grassroots leader in Olu-madu told TamilNet.

SL Forest Department seizes permit lands of 600 Tamil families in Madu

The SL Forest Department has started to grab the lands of more than six hundred Eezham Tamil families, who have been residing in their permit lands for more than three decades in Madu Divisional Secretariat division of the district of Mannaar district. The grounds had been appropriately allocated to the families through Land Kachcheari forty and fifty years ago, and many of the families have seen their third generation in the residences located in the lands. However, the SL Forest Department, which comes under the direct rule of the occupying unitary state in Colombo, has systematically deployed Sinhala forest officers and field assistants from South to seize the lands of Eezham Tamils, say grassroots activists in the division.

New Delhi with ‘cultural presence’ not concerned about Chinese ‘heritage archaeology’ in Kayts

Even after losing Trincomalee to the grip of the US Pacific Command, which recently renamed itself as the United States Indo-Pacific Command, the New Delhi Establishment has no qualms of increasing Chinese presence in Jaffna. Informed media circles that interacted with Colombo-based diplomats of New Delhi as well as with Indian journalists well-connected to the Indian National Security Advisor, said there were no reservations about Chinese corporates accessing Poonakari nor about the ‘archaeology’ of Chinese at Allaip-piddi, a locality in the island of Oo'raaththu'rai (Kayts). “China accessing Poonakari for fishing and Kayts for isolated heritage purpose is not a security threat. We are already in control of the highest view of the area, and New Delhi is not worried of Chinese digging the coast of Kayts,” a diplomat said without specifying the “highest” lying locality of Indian control.

SL military, police engineer land disputes between Tamils and Muslims in Trincomalee

A systematic pattern of SL Police encouraging Tamil-speaking Muslims from Ki'n'niyaa division to seize the lands of Eezham Tamils and the intelligence officers of the occupying SL military instigating Tamil land-owners to act against the Muslim settlers engaged in clearing agricultural lands, owned by Tamils in Mahaweli river delta. A recent dispute went to the extent of a physical clash in Ve'l'lai-ma'na'l area, sources in Trincomalee said. Some of the disputed lands belong to the Tamil farmers from Kaddai-pa'richchcaan, Cheanaiyoor and I'raal-kuzhi in Moothoor division. SL Police in Ki'n'niyaa was backing the Muslim settlers, while Sinhala military intelligence unit from the SLA camp located near Kaddai-pa'richchaan bridge in the northeastern sector of Moothoor division was instigating Tamil owners to confront the Muslims.

New Delhis' suppression of Tamil Nadu equally detrimental as geopolitics of West

The latest happenings in the quasi-federal state of Tamil Nadu in India, need to be perused in a broader historical context, grasping the ever-raging conflict between the Centre being the dominating New Delhi Establishment and Tamil Nadu. The oppressed people of Tamil Nadu have been unable to strike power of balance with it, argues Norway-based Eezham Tamil anthropology academic Athithan Jayapalan in a recent paper. The underlying hegemony has also been one of the significant impediments to finding a confederal or, at the least a federal, solution to the national question of Eezham Tamils in the island situated along the southern tip of India. The New Delhi Establishment is adamantly upholding the unitary character of the genocidal state of Sri Lanka, even at the cost of its national security, and it has no qualms in sacrificing the self-determination and sovereignty of Eezham Tamils.

Tamil Nadu police detaining leader of May 17 Movement condemned in Jaffna

Thirumurugan Gandhi of May 17 Movement, who has been in Europe for almost three months closely working with Eezham Tamil diaspora and exiled Sinhala activists in Europe, was detained twice in India this week when he returned home from Europe. The right of Tamil Nadu activist is being oppressed in his own country because he was standing up for the rights of Eezham Tamils and other oppressed nations, said Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, the president of Tamil National Peoples Front. The TNPF organised a protest to raise awareness on the matter among Eezham Tamils in front of the bus stand in the city of Jaffna on Friday.

SL Court clamps down on media coverage of mass grave excavations in Mannaar

The Police of the occupying unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka has managed to secure a motion at Mannaar Magistrates’ Court, which was prohibiting local as well as foreign television, print and social media personalities from entering, photographing or videotaping the mass graves. Mannaar Magistrate T.J. Pirapaharan has also restricted people from accessing the site without permission from the officer in charge of the excavation at the site. Sources close to the SL Police in Mannaar said they filed an application following the instructions coming from their headquarters in Colombo on Tuesday. In the meantime, informed sources in Colombo told TamilNet that the Buddhist Establishment was getting annoyed as Sinhala visitors touring Mannaar started to visit the excavation site and discuss it in the social media.

NPC Minister responds to SLA Commander, British Archaeologist on Jaffna Fort controversies

The recent statement made by Lt Gen Mahesh Senanayake, the SL military chief, who claimed the SL military as the rightful owner of the Jaffna Fort, was invalid, illogical and a fabricated one, said Education Minister of Northern Provincial Council Sarveswaran Kandiah, in an exclusive interview to TamilNet this weekend. “There is no rule stating that all the fortresses [in the island] should belong to the [SL] military,” Dr Sarveswaran said. Senanayake should mind his own business by confining himself to the leadership of the elected leaders in a democracy and by refraining from intervening in the civil affairs in the North-East, the NPC minister said. He was also responding to British Archaeologist Professor Robin Coningham's proposition of ‘visitor experience’ and ‘tourism’ shaping the so-called post-conflict future of Jaffna through advancing tangible and intangible heritage.

Protesting grassroots Tamil activists targeted in Jaffna, Vanni

Unknown attackers, who are believed to be the operatives of the occupying SL military or the intruding Sinhala fishers in Vadamaraadchi East, Jaffna, have burnt down another boat of a Tamil fisherman activist in the early hours on Monday. Arulappu Nimal, a father of two, lost his boat at Thaa'laiyadi. This is the second incident within the last ten days in which the attackers have targeted the vessels that belong to Tamil fishers who staged a self-mobilised action against the Sinhala sea cucumber poachers in Vadamaraadchi East. In the meantime, the SL Police has acted against a leading Tamil woman activist in Keappaa-pulavu, Mullaiththeevu, allegedly on the instructions from the occupying SL military.

Maithiripala ‘coordinates’ relentless land grab at massive-scale in North-East

Occupying Colombo's Forest Conservation Department and Wildlife Conservation Department have grabbed tens of thousands of acres of lands in the eight districts of North-East. These departments, coming under the unitary state system based in Colombo, are refusing to hand over even a few hundred of acres of these lands to the Divisional Secretariats and other mechanisms, which are also controlled by the same unitary system. A meeting convened by the SL Presidential Secretariat on Friday ended up strengthening further the position of the SL Forest and Wild-Life departments, Tamil officials who attended the meeting said. The Ministry of ‘Mahaweli Development’ and Environment, to which SL President Maithiripala Sirisena is the responsible minister, plays a central role in determining the extent of lands that could be released back, the officials told TamilNet on Saturday.

Traces of torture surface, 5 children among slaughtered victims in Mannaar killing fields

The human skeletons recovered so far until Wednesday at the premises of Cooperative Wholesale Establishment in Mannaar indicate that five among the dozens of victims were children below the age of six, based on their milk teeth. As the skeletons were found very close to adults in a cluster, the majority of the children could have belonged to a single or couple of the victim families, those who witnessed the excavations told TamilNet on Thursday. Further, the cut injuries sustained by the victims seem to have been caused by metallic objects with sharp edges, they also said. The latest findings come in addition to the earlier witnessed gunshot-like holes in the skulls.

The Sinhala authorities in Polonnaruwa have managed to suppress the news of the brutal incident from the focus of the Tamil politicians, the journalists and the rights activists for almost three months. This week, the Mathivathy, the wife of the 35-year-old victim, Pathmanathan Muruguppillai, revealed the details to Tamil rights activists in Batticaloa. Pathmanathan was a father of three. After the time of the LTTE, the poverty-stricken sections of Tamils in Batticaloa are being treated much worse than second-class citizens as there is nobody to defend their interests, the rights activists who are looking into the case since Tuesday, told TamilNet on Wednesday.

Remembering 35th Black July with Tamil resolve

This week, Eezham Tamils in the homeland and the Tamil Diaspora mark the 35th anniversary of the collective trauma of the ‘Black July’, the SL state-sponsored genocidal pogrom that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Tamil residents in the south of the island in 1983. The key lesson learned throughout the years of the pogroms, massacres, genocidal war and finally the post-war structural genocide, which is aimed at dismantling the existence of Eezham Tamils as a nation, is a hard reality. The genocide originating from the Mahawansa mind-set always gets its way, not because of the strength of the Sinhala nation, but mainly because the external State actors sustaining the Colombo-centric approach, is that lesson. British archaeologists, Indian contractors abet Colombo's concealment of mass graves in Jaffna

Human skeletons, including that of children, believed to belong to the massacred Eezham Tamils during the times of genocidal war, have been discovered at two separate locations in the city of Jaffna between 15th and 20th of July. At the Jaffna Fort, bones of a child along with a golden ring engraved with the initials ‘SA’ has been recovered. Following this discovery, the officials of Colombo's Archaeological Department have sent Tamil excavators home while allowing the Sinhala and the British excavators to proceed with the work. On Friday, another alleged mass grave discovered at Naayanmaar-kaddu in Ka'l'liyang-kaadu in Jaffna seems to be an extension of the Chemma'ni killing fields from the times of Chandrika Kumaratunga's genocidal rule of Jaffna in the mid-1990s.

Uprooted Mu'l'lik-ku'lam Tamils adopt Ira'nai-theevu approach, enter their lands seized by SL Navy

More than 200 Tamil families were living in Mu'l'lik-ku'lam eleven years before, in 2007, when the Sinhala military of genocidal Sri Lanka seized the coastal village facing towards the Gulf of Mannaar. Last year, the occupying SL Navy said it would consider handing over a small pocket of 77 acres of the total 5,000 acres back to the people, after ten years of protests and finally the people waging a continuous protest for 38 days in March and April 2017. However, the SL Navy didn't clear the lands and hand them over to the people despite repeated requests. The promise was a deceptive move aimed at containing the protest. However, around 50 of the 200 families have now chosen to enter the lands by themselves. They are now confined to the lands, which the SL Navy said it was prepared to release, Catholic priests in Mannaar told TamilNet on Wednesday.

SL High Court in Vavuniyaa tricked again into postponing hearings on TPP case

The Attorney General Department of the unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka has once again managed to get the SL High Court in Vavuniyaa to postpone the long-awaited hearing on a case involving three Tamil political prisoners (TPP) by two months. After re-transferring case back to Vavuniyaa from the so-called Special Court in Anuradhapura, a previous hearing at the Vavuniyaa was also postponed at the request of the SL Attorney General's Department, which was arguing that it needed time to locate a witness, who was supposed to appear for the hearing in Vavuniyaa. In the meantime, Vavuniyaa High Court Judge Sasi Mahendran, well versed in the particular case, has been transferred away from the High Court in Vavuniyaa. Judge Mahendran has been critical of the role played by the AG Department.
