Srimavopura attacks threaten civilian travel in Trincomalee

Representations have been made to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Trincomalee to ensure safety to Tamil and Muslim civilians who travel to and from north of Trincomalee passing through Srimavopura, a suburb an about one km north of the east port town from being attacked by Sinhala mobs. Civil groups have complained to the SLMM that Tamil and Muslim civilians are attacked at Srimavopura junction by Sinhalese gangs in the presence of soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and policemen of the Sri Lanka Police (SLP), sources said.

Mannar town, suburbs under strict SLA surveillance

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Police instituted strict surveillance of Mannar district by establishing several roadblocks and sentry points in several key roads and junctions. Residents of Mannar town were perturbed Saturday morning when they were subjected to severe body checks passing through newly set up roadblocks and checkpoints, residents said.

SLA opens access routes, blocks transport of Tamil paper

After complaints from Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) opened the six access routes to LTTE controlled areas in Batticaloa district Saturday, but blocked transport of the Tamil daily "Batticaloa Eelanatham" into Sri Lanka Government controlled areas at the Pattiruppu bridge, Manmunai and Iranguthurai checkpoints, sources in Batticaloa said.

SLA, STF block access routes to LTTE areas in Batticaloa

A boat service, two ferry services and three land routes were blocked for all traffic between the LTTE controlled areas and SLA controlled areas disrupting civilian life as officials and school teachers were blocked from crossing the border, civilian sources said.

Grenade lobbed at SLA sentry post in Batticaloa

Two unidentified attackers riding in a motorbike lobbed a grenade at the Sri Lanka Army sentry post located near the Batticaloa Railway station at Kalliyankadu in Batticaloa. The incident took place Thursday around 7:30 p.m. Four SLA soldiers who were on duty, narrowly escaped from the attack, Police said.

Two STF soldiers, policeman killed in two attacks in Batticaloa

Dead Batticaloa man identified

Youth shot and killed, SLA soldier, policemen injured in grenade attack

A Tamil youth was shot and killed by the Sri Lanka Army soldiers and policemen following a grenade attack at a police post located in Urani junction on Batticaloa-Valaichenai Road, 3 km north of Batticaloa town. An SLA corporal, Mr. M. D. Somasri, 32, was seriously wounded and three police constables sustained minor injuries when unidentified attackers lobbed a grenade at the police post around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police and SLA soldiers fired at random following the attack. Many Tamil civilians in the neighbourhood were beaten up by Sri Lanka Army soldiers, civilian sources said.

Grenade attack on SLA sentry injures two civilians

Unidentified men lobbed a grenade at a sentry point of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) located at Mudcove junction, a suburb in Trincomalee town along Mattikali road, Tuesday night around 9.45 p.m. Soldiers manning the sentry point retaliated the attack. A Hindu priest, Mr.Uruthirakurukkal Aravinthakumar (35), and his assistant, Mr.Sivagnanam, who were passing at that time on a motorbike were injured during the incident and were admitted to the Trincomalee general hospital, police said.

STF soldiers forced their way in by braking the doors and seized documents and stationary, sources said.

Three LTTE cadres killed, five injured in Vaharai

Three Liberation Tigers cadres were killed when a group of armed men wearing military fatigues raided a sentry post at Kattumurivu inside Liberation Tigers controlled Vaharai area Tuesday morning around 8:45 a.m. Five cadres were injured in the raid, according to LTTE officials in Sampoor. Meanwhile, SLA sources in Welikanda told local reporters that a 40 mm grenade launcher, four T-56 rifles, ten grenades, two claymore mines and three LTTE uniform kits were captured by the attackers, claiming that the raid was carried out by "Mangalan Master", a Karuna loyalist.

One SLA soldier dead, two injured in grenade attack in Chenkalady

Unidentified men riding in motorbikes lobbed a grenade and fired at three Sri Lanka Army soldiers in Chenkalady around 5:00 p.m. Monday. The three SLA soldiers, who were on duty on Batticaloa-Chenkalady road sustained serious injuries in the attack. One of the soldiers, SLA Corporal R. P. Banadra, 35, later succumbed to his wounds at Batticaloa hospital, Eravur Police said.

A 14-year old boy who was traveling on the street sustained shrapnel wounds, Police said.

Three SLA soldiers injured in two attacks on Batticaloa Valaichenai road

Unidentified gunmen attacked Sri Lanka Army soldiers in two different locations on Batticaloa Valaichenai highway around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. One SLA soldier was injured in the attack that took place at Kiran-Korakallimadu area north of Batticaloa and two SLA soldiers were injured in another attack, one kilometers away at Sithandy. The injured soldiers were airlifted to Polannaruwa hospital in critical condition, Police said. SLA soldiers started beating civilian travellers in Sithandy and Santhiveli, travellers said adding that all transport on the highway had come to a hault. Tension prevailed in the area following the attacks.

SLN soldiers assault Polikandi fishermen

Three-wheeler driver arrested at Uyilankulam army checkpoint

The Sri Lanka Army Tuesday morning arrested a Muslim person Mohamed Sultan Mohamed Sahabdeen at the Uyilankulam checkpoint with the three-wheeler he was taking it to LTTE controlled Nachchikudah in the Mannar district. Mannar Magistrate Mr.N.M.M.Abdullah ordered remand for the suspect till Thursday (September 1) when the Mannar police produced him in court Wednesday evening, legal sources said.

Two more gunfire incidents in east

Sri Lankan Army soldiers patrolling the streets in Valaichenai and Kiran were fired upon by unidentified attackers in two separate incidents Wednesday noon. The shooting incidents were reported on Pethalai Road in Valaichenai, 39 km north of Batticaloa town and at Korakallimadu, a hamlet near Kiran. SLA soldiers opened fire following the gunfire by the unidentified attackers. Casualty figures were not immediately available.

Four soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), a policeman and a civilian were injured in three separate incidents that took place Wednesday morning in Batticaloa district. They were injured in grenade attack and firing by unidentified men, Police sources said. All the incidents were reported on Batticaloa-Valaichenai highway within 17 km distance between Eravur and Valaichenai. Security is beefed up by the Sri Lanka Army and Police following the attacks along the highway.

LTTE cadres, civilians attacked in Vaharai, one dead, three injured

An LTTE cadre, Mr. Reagon, was killed and three persons including two civilians were injured when a group of Sri Lanka Army soldiers and paramilitary cadres, who had moved into the LTTE held area Kirimichchai in Vaharai from the SLA held Panichchankerni, shot at LTTE cadres and civilians, LTTE's Political Head in Batticaloa Mr. Ilanthirayan told TamilNet. The attack took place around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) officials in Batticaloa refused to provide any detail of their knowlegde of the incident. In the meantime, civilians close to Panichankerni SLA base witnessed a group of attackers with military fatigues enter the SLA base following the attack.
