SLN increases troop strength in Veala'nai

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) command has been transporting additional soldiers to the SLN camp in Veala'nai in the islets of Jaffna for the past three days, sources in Jaffna said. Soldiers are arriving in SLN ships from Mannaar to Kayts, and also from Colombo to Palaali by air and transported by road to Veala'nai, according to sources.

Witness safety stalls Allaippiddi massacre case

The main witness to the Allaippiddi massacre, where 13 civilians were allegedly killed by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldiers in May 2006, informed Additional Magistrate of Kayts, T. Vignarajah, that he has sought safety in Vanni fearing for his life from Sri Lankan forces and that he will be unable to travel to Kayts to attend any court proceedings, legal sources in Jaffna said.

British documentary team forced to leave Jaffna

0The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna has forced three female journalists, including two journalists from UK based Quicksilver Media and a Sri Lankan journalist accompanying them, to return to Colombo Friday, canceling their documentary mission in Jaffna for the British Channel 4 Television. On Thursday, an hour after arriving at a hotel in Jaffna city, with military escort, they were taken back to Palaali base where they had to stay overnight before returning to Colombo next day. The SLA officers in Palaali, upon the arrival of the documentary team, had offered accommodation in a military camp, but the journalists had declined to accept the offer, informed media sources in Colombo said.

Allaippiddi massacre witnesses fear travel to Jaffna

Witnesses to identify Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel alleged to have massacred 13 civilians at Allaipiddy last year did not appear at Kayts Court Tuesday for fear of their lives, Attorney-at-law, S. Remedias, appearing on their behalf, informed Additional Magistrate R. T. Vignarajah at the inquiry into Allaipiddy massacre case. The witnesses, presently living in Ki'linochchi in Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled area, fear to travel through Vavuniyaa and then sail from Trincomalee to Jaffna as they are afforded security only in Jaffna peninsula, the lawyer told the courts.

SLA collects details of mobile phones in Jaffna

The SLA has already collected the details of the motor vehicles in the peninsula, and at present is collecting the details of the bicycles. Veala'nai DS employee seeks protection

An employee of Veala'nai Divisional Secretariat (DS), threatened to death continuously, (allegedly by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and its collaborating paramilitary members), sought safety Monday with his superior officers. The officers took steps with the help of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Tuesday for him to be placed in the protective custody in Jaffna prison, HRC sources said. Meanwhile, two Chaiva temple trustees, including an education official in Veala'nai arrested earlier, are still detained at the Sri Lanka police interrogation centre in the 'Fourth Floor', in Colombo.

Headless body recovered, woman killed in Jaffna

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen shot dead a young woman Sunday night in her house at Manthuvil north in Thenmaraadchi, Kodikaamam police said.

Trader shot dead in Jaffna Islet

A 57-year father of five from Vealanai East in Jaffna Islets was shot dead by unknown gunmen riding in a motorbike at 12:00 noon Sunday, sources in Jaffna said. The man was buying goods for his trading business in Vealanai when the gunmen following the victim shot him from behind and escaped, according to eyewitnesses.

3 High School students abducted in Jaffna

SLN shoots dead Hindu priest in Velanai

The chief priest of Mudippi'l'laiyaar Hindu Temple in Velanai west was shot dead in the firefight between Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and a group of youths during a cordon and search operation Sunday around 10:00 a.m in Velanai, in the islets of Jaffna, sources in Kayts said. Meanwhile, unidentified armed men shot and killed a tailor shop owner at Naaranthanai in Kayts Tuesday evening, the sources added.

Barrage of gunfire as Tiger aircrafts complete bombing raid, woman wounded

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers in camps across Jaffna Peninsula emptied bullets in the air in a barrage of gunfire after Tamileelam Air Force (TAF) attacked SLA's main base complex in the Jaffna peninsula in the early hours of Tuesday morning, residents in the peninsula said. A woman was wounded in Eezhaalai, 5 km southwest of Palaali when Sri Lanka Army soldiers opened fire from their positions as the Tiger aircrafts, that completed their mission inside the High Security Zone of the Palaali garrison, flew at low altitude on their way back to Vanni.

Six civilians disappear in Jaffna

Abductions and disappearances of Tamil persons in Jaffna district by members of Sri Lankan armed forces and allied paramilitaries are continuing unabated amid accusations by the international community at the 4th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva for Sri Lanka's human rights violations against their citizens, civil society sources in Jaffna said. Within 36 hours from Tuesday morning to Wednesday evening, six complaints of abductions were lodged at the Jaffna branch of the Human Rights Commission (HRC).

SLA introduces pass system to travel out of Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) high command in Jaffna said it requires all persons wishing to leave Jaffna district to provide a surety to stand guarantee for the return of the applicant as an additional requirement to obtain a pass to travel out of the distriict. The travellers are asked to submit applications to the area SLA official through the Village Officer and the Divisional Secretary. Civil society sources expressed concern over the new regulations restricting the freedom of movement, and urged Rights groups to bring pressure on Colombo to stop the deteriorating human rights situation in Northeast.
