Shelling, troop movement in Batticaloa, 3 killed

As fighting rages in Trincomalee district, to the south, Sri Lanka Army troops Friday attacked Liberation Tigers’ positions in northern part of Batticaloa district. Following five hours of intense shelling, that killed 3 members of a family, SLA troops and paramilitaries advanced towards LTTE positions in Panichchankerni before being beaten back. Meanwhile, a significant number of Sri Lanka Army troops in Batticaloa town have been withdrawn for deployment in Trincomalee and their duties were being assigned to the troops from the elite Special Task Force (STF). All leave has been cancelled for police forces.

Batticaloa Volunteer Teachers pledge to continue fast

Members of the Batticaloa District Volunteer Teacher’s Association (BDVTA) have rejected interview notifications sent out by the Ministry of Education and have Tuesday resumed their fast in front of the Batticaloa Zonal Education Office. Citing fundamental errors and discrepancies in the letters sent to them, the volunteer teachers decided to continue the fast which has disrupted the normal working routine of the office, sources in Batticaloa said.

2 Policemen, civilian wounded in grenade attack

Large number of Muslim people participated in a demonstration held Friday after Jumma prayers in Oluvil village in the Amparai district condemning the indiscriminate aerial and ground attack on Lebanon and Palestine by the State of Israel. Hundreds of Muslims went in a procession from the premises of Oluvil Jumma Mosque to Oluvil playgrounds and burnt the national flags of the United States of America and Israel, and the effigy of Israel Prime Minister, sources said.

Kalmunaikudi residents protest, demand permanent housing

A group of tsunami affected families in Kalmunaikudi area in Amparai district protested in front of the Divisional Secretariat office Wednesday against the failure of the Government authorities to provide permanent houses, civil sources said. The Kalmunaikudi Divisional Secretariat office did not work following the protest. Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse gave the Kalmunaikudi residents three months ago that the Government would provide houses within a short period.

Former Divisional Secretary remembered

Special Task Force (STF) soldiers of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) cordoned off and searched Akkaraipattu, Aalaiyadi Vembu, Vaachikuda, Naavatkuda and Kolavil areas of Amparai district from 4:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Thursday, security sources said. Soldiers had in their possession a target list of names and registration numbers of motorbikes, local residents said.
