Tigers hand over SLA bodies

The Liberation Tigers handed over the bodies of 126 soldiers who were killed at Elephant Pass to the International Committee of the Red Cross at kilinochchi around 12.30 p.m. today. ICRC spokesman Harsha Gunawardena said that the bodies are being transported to Vavuniya and that it is expected that the convoy would cross the lines late this evening.

ICRC medical supplies blocked

Sri Lankan troops this week prevented the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from taking its MoD authorised medical supplies for its mobile and primary health clinics in the Vanni, the ICRC spokesman Harsha Gunawardena told TamilNet Thursday. He expressed concern for the civilians in the Vanni who relied on the ICRC facilities.

SLA blocking essential medical supplies - MSF

Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF), the international aid agency said Monday Sri Lankan security forces were preventing it from taking urgently needed medical supplies into the Vanni region. The shortage of essential drugs in the region had become "critical" MSF said in a statement.

Offensive for MSR thwarted -VoT

The Liberation Tigers said this evening that they thwarted a two pronged operation by the Sri Lanka army (SLA) this afternoon to attack and overrun their defences on the A9 at Muhamaalai, about 14.5 kilometers south east of Chavakachcheri. They said that a main battle tank was destroyed and another damaged when their troops counter attacked the SLA. A South African 'Buffle' fitted with .50 heavy machine gun was also captured from the army in the battle they said.

Radio lists Tiger KIA

The Voice of Tigers said in its special noon broadcast today that thirty one Tigers including two black Tigers and a member of the organisation's 'border force' were killed in the latest phase of Operation Unceasing Waves III in Jaffna. Woman injured, youth killed in STF fire

A woman was wounded in the stomach when the Special Task Force (STF) commandos of the Sri Lankan security forces opened fire in a village south east of Mannar in the Murunkan sector this morning. The woman, Ponnuthurai Kathirasipillai, 52, was in the kitchen of her house in Vaalkaipetraan Kandal when she was hit in the stomach.

Bomb detected in Colombo bound train

A powerful parcel bomb was detected in the Colombo bound night mail train from Vavuniya just before it was scheduled to leave the station yesterday, said sources. The bomb was removed from the compartment and was diffused opposite the Railway station by the SLA bomb disposal team.

TID arrests five in Vavuniya

Five civilians including four employees of the main Post Office in Vavuniya were arrested by a special team of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) of the Sri Lankan Police from Colombo today. Two Sub Post Masters, K.Kugathasan and A.Subramaniapillai and two minor employees, Thirunaavukkarasu and Raveendran were arrested while they were on duty at the Vavuniya main post office said sources.

'City of Trincomalee' to ferry refugees

The privately owned passenger vessel 'City of Trincomalee' is to be used for transporting displaced Jaffna people from the Vanni region to north under the resettlement scheme. The expenses will be borne by the State. Refugees will not be charged any fee, according to a letter sent by the Commissioner General of Essential Services to Trincomalee Divisional Secretary.
